Graphic designers design images and words to get across ideas and information. Working to a 'brief' from a client or, in the case of the advertising industry, a senior designer or account executive, they create designs for adverts, packaging, menus, books, posters, letter headings, company logos, catalogues, magazines and newspapers, television and film credits, captions and websites.Can work with companies while other prefer to be freelance.
Pay is about £15,000 to £18,000 a year for a starting qualified graphic designer but with experience and gaining of skills this can increase to a wage of £20,000 to £30,000

the hours can vary, for much bigger projects the work hours can be huge to try and reach deadlines in for time. Or much less hours for more easyier projects
there is a 3 year course for art and design in the fourth valley collage, it as as following for each year:
Year 1: Visual arts; applied crafts; digital arts; site specific design; graphic design; performance related design; web design; animation; self-employment; video production; community art; textile design; teacher or lecturer.
Year 2: Creative skills and concepts; integrated project; visual literacy; digital applications; specialist options: skills development; contextual studies; personal development planning.
Year 3: Creative practice; contextual practice; specialist options: skills application practice; research skills; critical and contextual studies; pathways and contexts; professional and studio practice; professional and contextual studies; creative futures.
the entry requirements is a good portfolio & 3 Higher grades or equivalent. this is a good cources which helps for graphic and desgin as you go in to it in some detail
Well done John, this is a good basic outline of a Graphic Designers job. Its good to see some information on what subjects you need to study at school such as Art & Design.
ReplyDeleteAlthough we dont have Graphic Design and Visual Communication in school as separate subjects these are covered in subjects such as Graph Comm and Art & Design.
It would be nice to see some information on what colleges and universities offer courses in Graphic Design and what the differences are between these courses.
What kind of skills would a colllege or university be looking for when taking students and what sort of skills would you get a chance to further develop?
